Below are some good places to find free-to-use images. Visit <a href=\"#AddCaptions\">Add Captions to Images<\/a> and <a href=\"#AddAttributions\">Add Image Attribution Statements<\/a> below to learn more.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<h2>How to Add an Image<\/h2>\r\nTo add an image to your textbook, open the page where you want to place the image. Select the spot where the image will go with your cursor. This will allow you to search for image files to add from your computer (Figure 3.7.2).\r\n<div class=\"textbox\"><strong>Note:<\/strong> files must be JPG, PNG or GIF. Avoid simply copying and pasting images from other websites since that could mean the image will disappear if it is ever removed from the original website hosting it.<\/div>\r\nFinally, make sure that your image is centred correctly and the right size. We strongly recommend that:\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li>All images are centred<\/li>\r\n \t<li>The width does not exceed 500 pixels<\/li>\r\n \t<li>The length does not exceed 500 pixels<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\nSee \"Editing an Image\" below for details on how to adjust an image.\r\n\r\nImages that do not follow the above guidelines often produce PDFs that are less readable. A PDF file is one of the many formats offered for most textbooks in our collection. It is also used to create print-on-demand copies.\r\n\r\n<a id=\"editingimages\"><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.424em; font-weight: bold; word-spacing: normal;\">How to Edit an Image<\/span>\r\n\r\nTo change the placement or size of an image that has already been added to a page, simply click anywhere on the image. You will see a menu of options appear above the image. Here you can:\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li>Add text for the image's caption. (See <a href=\"#AddCaptions\">Add Captions to Images<\/a> and <a href=\"#AddAttributions\">Add Image Attribution Statements<\/a> for details.)<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Under DISPLAY SETTINGS, select \"Center\". We recommend that you centre images.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Using the \"Size\" dropdown list, determine if any of the sizes are the correct size for your image. Using the Width OR Height boxes, enter the correct number of pixels. Note that changing one of these parameters, e.g. Width, will automatically adjust the other, e.g. Height.\r\n\r\n4. See \"<a href=\"https:\/\/openbooks.macewan.ca\/authorsguide\/chapter\/images\/#alttextguidelines\">Alternative Text Descriptions<\/a>.\"<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Click on <strong>\"Update\"<\/strong> and then <strong>Save<\/strong> the page.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>What to Include in a Caption<\/h3>\r\n<a id=\"image-numbering-system\"><\/a>When adding the caption description, be sure to use a numbering system that incorporates the chapter number and image sequence within the chapter section.\r\n\r\nAfter numbering the figure or table, provide a description:\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_69\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"300\"]<img class=\"wp-image-69 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/openbooks.macewan.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2026\/01\/34860064142_1960e6a910_c-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Green turtle image example\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/> Figure 3.8.1 Green turtle in its natural environment in Indonesia.[\/caption]\r\n<h2><a id=\"AddAttributions\"><\/a>Add Image Attribution Statements<\/h2>\r\nAttribution statements are used to credit the author\/creator of an image, provide its source, and detail any copyright terms.\r\n<div class=\"textbox\">\r\n\r\nVisit <a href=\"https:\/\/openbooks.macewan.ca\/authorsguide\/chapter\/attribution-statements\/\">Attribution Statements<\/a> for guidance on how to create an attribution statement.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\nImage attributions can either be included in the caption area beneath an image or in an Attributions section at the end of a chapter or section.\r\n<div class=\"mceTemp\"><\/div>\r\n<h3>Who Gets Attribution for an Image?<\/h3>\r\nIt is important to understand WHO to give credit to for an image. Frequently, especially for a work in the public domain, it is not the artist who created the original work. Instead, you must attribute the individual who created the version of the work that you are using in your book or educational resource. In other words, you are giving attribution to, for example, a photographer of an original painting.\r\n\r\nBelow is a photograph of the famous painting, The Night Watch, by Rembrandt. Frequently, especially for a work in the public domain, it is not the artist who created the original work. Instead, you must attribute the individual who created the version of the work that you are using in your book or educational resource. In other words, you are giving attribution to, for example, a photographer of an original painting.<\/p>\n<p>Below is a photograph of the famous painting, The Night Watch, by Rembrandt.
