The tribes who settled in central and northern Europe spoke Proto-Germanic.\r\n\r\nProto-Celtic was spoken by the tribes who continued their migration to the western periphery of the continent and on to what is now called the British Isles.\r\n<h3>Celtic<\/h3>\r\nIn the first millennium B.C.E., Proto-Celtic split into a variety of distinct languages.\r\n\r\nOriginal versions of the following languages were spoken in distinct regions: Irish was spoken in Ireland, Scots Gaelic in Scotland, Welsh in Wales, Cornish in southwestern Britain, and Manx on the Isle of Man.\r\n<h3>Germanic<\/h3>\r\nAround 1000 B.C.E., Proto-Germanic differentiated from other Indo-European languages in its pronunciation of certain sounds, which has been called the First Sound Shift.\r\n\r\nThe Germanic languages spoken on the western periphery of the continent formed a group called the West Germanic Branch, spoken by the Angles, the Saxons, the Jutes, and the Frisians, who went on to invade Britain beginning around 449 C.E. (see Anglo Invasion of Britain).\r\n\r\nThe Germanic languages spoken in modern-day Scandinavia formed a group called North Germanic, spoken by the Vikings (Norse) who invaded Britain a few centuries later, around 793 C.E. (See Viking Invasion of Britain).\r\n<h3>Old English<\/h3>\r\nFrom 449 C.E. to 1100 C.E., waves of invasion, migration, and settlement of Germanic tribes from modern-day Denmark and Germany (the Angles, the Saxons, the Jutes, and the Frisians) pushed the Celtic-speaking people to the outlying regions of Britain (Cornwall, Wales, Scotland) and established the Anglo-Saxon people as the main population in Britain. (See the Anglo Invasion of Britain.)\r\n\r\nThe language (which was constantly changing and evolving) spoken by these people is called Anglo-Saxon, and it formed the base for Old English.\r\n\r\nThe Norse people from modern-day Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, who spoke North Germanic languages, started to invade Britain in the late eighth century. They settled in the north and east of Britain. (See Viking invasion of Britain.)\r\n\r\nDue to the influence of the Norse languages, the vocabulary of Old English was expanded (with the addition of <em>sk<\/em> words like <em>sky, skin, skill, <\/em>and<em> skirt<\/em>, for example) and the complicated system of inflectional endings on nouns and verbs was simplified or <strong>levelled<\/strong>.\r\n<h3>Middle English<\/h3>\r\nThe Middle English period lasted from 1100 C.E. to 1500 C.E.\r\n\r\nThe biggest change in the language came about from the influx of French vocabulary introduced by the French-speaking ruling and upper classes for the few centuries after the Norman invasion.\r\n\r\nSome characteristics of the language were the <em>thou<\/em> series of pronouns being used as well as simple negation and interrogation.\r\n\r\nThe Great Vowel Shift had begun (but not ended) and the printing press had been invented, which led to some spelling standardization.\r\n<h2>Modern English or Present-Day English<\/h2>\r\nModern English dates from 1650 to the present day.\r\n\r\nModern English is an international language used as a first or second language throughout the world. (See World Englishes.)\r\n<h2>The People and Main Events<\/h2>\r\n<h3>European Copper Age<\/h3>\r\nThe Copper Age was a transitional period between the Stone Age (when most tools were made of stone) and the Bronze Age (when tools were instead made of certain metals, especially bronze). In the Copper Age, stone tools were used alongside early metal ones, often made of copper.\r\n\r\nIn Europe, the Copper Age lasted for a period sometime in the fourth millennium B.C.E. (that is, sometime between 4000 B.C.E. and 3000 B.C.E.).\r\n<h3>Celtic Tribes Reach Britain<\/h3>\r\nCeltic tribes had reached and settled in Britain, including modern-day Ireland, by the late Iron Age, sometime around 300 B.C.E. (which was the period of maximum Celtic expansion).\r\n<h3>Roman Empire Reaches Britain<\/h3>\r\nThe main Roman invasion of Britain took place in 43 C.E., although, prior to that, smaller incursions had taken place and certain trading and diplomatic relationships had been established between Roman forces and outposts and the Celtic peoples of southern Britain.\r\n\r\nRoman forces took control of all of present-day England and Wales but never reached present-day Ireland or Scotland.\r\n\r\nIn fact, the Romans gave up trying to conquer the Pictish and Celtic tribes in that region, so they built Hadrian\u2019s Wall (starting around 122 C.E.) to contain them in the north.\r\n\r\nSome Roman soldiers settled in Britain and intermarried with the local Celtic population. William the Conqueror, as he came to be known, took the throne as the King of England.\r\n\r\nThe Normans took control of all government, administration, and church affairs, thus introducing many French words into the vocabulary of English.\r\n\r\nFrench was the main language of the ruling and upper classes for almost four centuries, until the end of the Hundred Years\u2019 War.\r\n<h3>Imperialism and Colonization; Discovering New People<\/h3>\r\nThe years from 1500 to the early 1900s marked a period of exploration, domination, and colonization for England.\r\n\r\nEngland started by establishing plantations in parts of Ireland before extending its reach across the Atlantic and colonizing parts of North America.\r\n\r\nImperial expansion also took place to the east with colonization of Indonesia and India, and eventually to the South Pacific, primarily Australia.\r\n\r\nIn the late 1800s to early 1900s, England colonized many regions in Africa.\r\n\r\nToday\u2019s Commonwealth is a grouping of 53 independent nations, most of which were once British colonies.\r\n<h3>Global Communications and Interdependence<\/h3>\r\nModern technology allows for fast and cheap global communications.\r\n\r\nJust as ideas, products, and commodities are being shared between nations, so are <strong>words<\/strong>!\r\n\r\nEnglish has borrowed words from all over the globe just as other languages are borrowing English words to talk about our modern world.\r\n<h3>Inward Influx of Peoples\/Languages<\/h3>\r\nFor the first several thousands of years in which people have inhabited the British Isles, much of the linguistic change has been the result of waves of different people migrating to and\/or invading the islands (for example, Celts, Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, Normans).\r\n<h3>Outward Expansion and Contact with Societies Around the Globe<\/h3>\r\nFor the last 500 years much of the new vocabulary has been due to English-speaking people exploring, conquering, and colonizing places all around the globe.\r\n\r\nAs these speakers encountered new societies, new animals, new foods, new technologies, and so forth, they needed words to talk about these objects, so they often borrowed the words that the local populations used.\r\n<h2>Other Key Events<\/h2>\r\n<h3>The Birth of Christ<\/h3>\r\nThis event is important for the development of English because, in the fourth century, Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire.\r\n\r\nEven after the withdrawal of Roman forces from Britain, Christian monasteries were established through the support of Rome in an effort to convert the inhabitants of the British Isles to Christianity.\r\n\r\nAll of the proceedings of the Church were carried out in Latin. Monasteries were also places of education, thus many Latin religious and educational terms entered the language.\r\n<h3>Roman Withdrawal from Britain<\/h3>\r\nBy around 410 all Roman troops had left Britain to fight battles on the continent, leading up to the eventual fall of the Roman Empire.\r\n<h3>Danelaw Established<\/h3>\r\nIn 878, Anglo-Saxon king Alfred the Great defeated the Vikings and established a region in which they were to live and peacefully coexist with the English.\r\n<h3>The Black Death<\/h3>\r\nThe Black Death (bubonic plague) spread through Europe in the late 1340s and reached England around 1348.\r\n\r\nIt killed a quarter to a third of Europe\u2019s population in the years 1347 to 1350.\r\n\r\nEngland was particularly harshly hit, with 70 percent of the population dying.\r\n\r\nEngland\u2019s pre-plague population was around 7 million by 1400, the population was only 2 million.\r\n\r\nNumerous but less devastating outbreaks of the bubonic plague continued to torment Europe until the 1700s.\r\n\r\nEngland\u2019s social structure was greatly affected with the peasant classes gaining upward mobility due to the labour shortage and more available land.\r\n\r\nAs a result, classes were intermingling much more, which is one suggestion for why the Great Vowel Shift occurred.\r\n<h3>Printing Press<\/h3>\r\nAround 1440, Johann Gutenberg invented the printing press in Germany, and it was soon reproduced throughout Europe.\r\n\r\nThe printing press allowed for mass production of written text. This resulted in\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>a much larger percentage of the population becoming literate<\/li>\r\n \t<li>beginning of the standardization of spelling systems.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Hundred Years\u2019 War<\/h3>\r\nThe Hundred Years\u2019 War was actually a series of wars between the House of Valois (based in France) and the Plantagenets (ruling in England) who were battling for the French throne.\r\n\r\nThe wars lasted just over 100 years (from 1337 to 1453).\r\n\r\nThe House of Valois won the war for the throne of France, and the Plantagenets were expelled from France.\r\n\r\nAfterwards, the close contact that had been maintained between England and France since the Norman Invasion came to an end, and nationalistic sentiments took hold.\r\n\r\nEnglish replaced French as the main language of the ruling and upper classes in England.\r\n<h3>English Renaissance and the Age of Exploration<\/h3>\r\nThe English Renaissance began in the early 1500s and was a period of great cultural and artistic growth.\r\n\r\nDuring the Age of Exploration, which lasted until the early 1700s, many nations in Europe, including England, explored the world by sea in search of trade goods and trading partners.\r\n\r\nThese periods led to a tremendous enhancement of knowledge that was accompanied by vast expansion of the English vocabulary.\r\n<h2>Language Characteristics<\/h2>\r\n<h3>The First Sound Shift<\/h3>\r\nWhen Proto-Germanic evolved from Proto-Indo-European during the first millennium B.C.E., one of the big changes was in the pronunciation of certain consonants (which marks today\u2019s Germanic languages as different from other Indo-European languages).\r\n\r\nIn 1822, Jakob Grimm (of Grimm\u2019s fairy tales) hypothesized this change and called it the First Sound Shift.\r\n\r\nHere are some examples from English (a Germanic language), Latin, and French (both Romance Languages) to demonstrate the difference.\r\n<table style=\"height: 60px;\" cellpadding=\"10\">\r\n<thead>\r\n<tr style=\"height: 15px;\">\r\n<td style=\"height: 15px; width: 136.344px;\"><em>fish<\/em><\/td>\r\n<td style=\"height: 15px; width: 116.688px;\"><em>piscis<\/em><\/td>\r\n<td style=\"height: 15px; width: 130.234px;\"><em>peche<\/em><\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n<h3>Highly Inflected<\/h3>\r\nLike German, its modern Germanic-language cousin, Anglo-Saxon had a system of endings, or <strong>suffixes<\/strong>, placed on noun and verb roots that conveyed grammatical information.\r\n\r\nOn nouns, the endings would indicate what role the noun played in the sentence (for example, was it the subject, the direct object, the indirect object?, etc.).\r\n\r\nOn verbs, the endings would indicate information about the subject (such as the number and person of the subject), about the verb itself (such as weak versus strong) and about the event (past, present, future, subjunctive, and so forth).\r\n\r\nSince nouns and verbs carried so much information about their relationship within the sentence, speakers did not need to rely on word order to establish those relationships.\r\n\r\nFor example, in Modern English the noun acting as the subject almost always comes in front of the verb and the noun acting as the object almost always comes after the verb.\r\n\r\n<em>The toddler<\/em> (subject) <em>hugged<\/em> (verb) <em>the dog<\/em> (object).\r\n\r\nMixing up the order does not make sense in Modern English (*<em>hugged the dog the toddler<\/em>) but would have been fine in Old English.\r\n<h3>Grammatical Simplification<\/h3>\r\nAnglo-Saxon was a highly <em>inflected <\/em>language.\r\n\r\nAs the Anglo-Saxon populations and the Norse populations began to interact and intermarry, the Anglo-Saxon language lost many of its complicated <em>inflectional<\/em> endings that marked grammatical information.\r\n\r\nThis type of change is called <strong><em>levelling<\/em><\/strong> (simplification due to languages mixing).\r\n\r\nInstead, the word order in sentences became more rigid as a way to indicate which nouns were acting as the subject or the object of a sentence.\r\n<h3>Compounding<\/h3>\r\nOne trait of Old English, similar to other Germanic languages, was the tendency to put two pre-existing words together to form a compound when a new word was required.\r\n\r\nFor example, the Old English word for <em>dawn<\/em> was <em>doegred<\/em>, which is a compound of <em>day <\/em>and<em> red<\/em>.\r\n<h3>Pronouns<\/h3>\r\nThe pronouns <em>thou, thee, thy, <\/em>and<em> thine<\/em> were used for second-person singular (where we use <em>you, you, your, yours<\/em> today).\r\n<h3>Simple Negation and Interrogation<\/h3>\r\nAsking questions (the <em>interrogative structure<\/em>) and negating a statement (the <em>negative structure<\/em>) were done without the assistance of an auxiliary verb such as <em>do<\/em>.\r\n\r\n\"Goest thou to market?\"\r\n\r\n\"I go not.\"\r\n<h3>Influx of French Vocabulary<\/h3>\r\nFrom the Norman invasion of England in 1066 to the end of the Hundred Years' War in 1453, the ruling and upper classes in England spoke French and had very close political and economic ties with France. As a result, many French words entered the vocabulary of the general public as well, especially in domains such as government and administration (for example, <em>citizen<\/em> and <em>salary<\/em>) and high society (such as, <em>servant<\/em> and <em>royal<\/em>).\r\n<h3>The Great Vowel Shift<\/h3>\r\nStarting sometime in the 13th century, English speakers started to change the way they pronounced many of the vowels in their language.\r\n\r\nBy around 1600 this sound shift had stabilized with the result that certain English vowels are pronounced quite differently than vowels of other European languages.\r\n\r\nFor example, in Italian the letter <em>i<\/em> is pronounced [i], whereas in English it is pronounced [aj] \/ [aI].\r\n\r\nThe shift was quite systematic in that speakers tended to pronounce the vowels with a higher jaw\/tongue position than they had previously done.\r\n\r\nThe examples below demonstrate pre- and post-shift pronunciation of certain words.\r\n<table style=\"height: 45px;\" cellpadding=\"10\">\r\n<tbody>\r\n<tr style=\"height: 15px;\">\r\n<td style=\"height: 15px; width: 232.775px;\"><em>name<\/em><\/td>\r\n<td style=\"height: 15px; width: 493.725px;\">[nam] to [nem]<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr style=\"height: 15px;\">\r\n<td style=\"height: 15px; width: 232.775px;\"><em>see<\/em>:<\/td>\r\n<td style=\"height: 15px; width: 493.725px;\">[se] to [si]<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr style=\"height: 15px;\">\r\n<td style=\"height: 15px; width: 232.775px;\"><em>moon<\/em>:<\/td>\r\n<td style=\"height: 15px; width: 493.725px;\">[mon] to [mun]<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\nThe tense vowels that were previously pronounced with the jaw\/tongue in the highest position (that is, [i] and [u]) were turned into diphthongs pronounced with a low jaw\/tongue.\r\n<table style=\"height: 30px;\" cellpadding=\"10\">\r\n<tbody>\r\n<tr style=\"height: 15px;\">\r\n<td style=\"height: 15px; width: 212.375px;\"><em>time<\/em><\/td>\r\n<td style=\"height: 15px; width: 449.25px;\">[tim] to [tajm]<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr style=\"height: 15px;\">\r\n<td style=\"height: 15px; width: 212.375px;\"><em>house<\/em><\/td>\r\n<td style=\"height: 15px; width: 449.25px;\">[hus] to [haws]<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_814\" align=\"alignleft\" width=\"300\"]<a href=\"https:\/\/openbooks.macewan.ca\/using-h5p-objects-in-online-courses\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/33\/2024\/04\/640px-Great_Vowel_Shift2b.svg_.png\"><img class=\"wp-image-814 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/openbooks.macewan.ca\/using-h5p-objects-in-online-courses\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/33\/2024\/04\/640px-Great_Vowel_Shift2b.svg_-300x133.png\" alt=\"Changes in vowels in the Great Vowel Shift\" width=\"300\" height=\"133\" \/><\/a> Figure 1.14 Changes in vowels in the <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Great_Vowel_Shift2b.svg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Great Vowel Shift<\/a> by Goran tek-en licensed under <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/4.0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0<\/a>.[\/caption]\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\nCertain words resisted the shift:\r\n<table cellpadding=\"10\">\r\n<tbody>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>shift:<\/td>\r\n<td><em>meat<\/em> to [mit]<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>no-shift:<\/td>\r\n<td><em>great<\/em> to [gret]<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><\/td>\r\n<td><em>break <\/em>to [brek]<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\nSince much of the spelling standardization of English occurred before the Great Vowel Shift had finished and since not all words underwent the shift, Modern English has, as a result, a very inconsistent and tricky spelling system.\r\n\r\nIn Scotland, the degree of vowel shift was quite different, which is one of the reasons why the Scottish accent is distinct.\r\n<h3>Spelling Standardization<\/h3>\r\nAfter the invention of the printing press, the spelling system of English gradually became much more standardized (as opposed to people spelling words according to their own particular accent or preference).\r\n\r\nMuch of the standardization happened before the end of the Great Vowel Shift. This resulted in some words being spelled, even today, very differently than they are pronounced.\r\n\r\nThe publication<em>,<\/em> in 1755, of Samuel Johnson's <em>Dictionary of the English Language <\/em>also aided in standardizing the spelling of English.\r\n<h3>Vocabulary Expansion; Discovering New People<\/h3>\r\nThe size of the English vocabulary exploded during the Early Modern and Modern English periods out of necessity to accommodate all the new ideas and objects that English speakers encountered during years of the English Renaissance and the Age of Exploration, followed by the periods of Imperialism and Colonization.\r\n\r\nWords were borrowed from all corners of the globe and incorporated into the English language.\r\n<h3>Complex Negation and Interrogation<\/h3>\r\nBy the Modern English period, negation and interrogation had evolved to today's complex structure that requires the involvement of one of the main auxiliary verbs: <em>to be<\/em>, <em>to have<\/em>, or <em>to do<\/em>.\r\n\r\nTo negate a sentence, the negative word is placed immediately after the auxiliary verb (bolded):\r\n<table cellpadding=\"10\">\r\n<tbody>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>I <strong>am<\/strong> going to school.<\/td>\r\n<td>becomes<\/td>\r\n<td>I <strong>am<\/strong> NOT going to school.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>I <strong>have<\/strong> seen this movie.<\/td>\r\n<td><\/td>\r\n<td>I <strong>have<\/strong> NOT seen this movie.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>I like ice cream.<\/td>\r\n<td><\/td>\r\n<td>I <strong>do<\/strong> NOT like ice cream.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\nNotice that if the basic declarative sentence (a sentence that makes a statement) does not contain an auxiliary verb, the 'dummy' auxiliary <em>do<\/em> is inserted.\r\n\r\nTo make an interrogative sentence (one that asks a question) out of a declarative, the positions of the subject and the auxiliary verb are reversed:\r\n<table cellpadding=\"10\">\r\n<tbody>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>The student <strong>is<\/strong> walking to school.<\/td>\r\n<td>becomes<\/td>\r\n<td><strong>Is<\/strong> the student walking to school?<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>You <strong>have<\/strong> seen this movie.<\/td>\r\n<td><\/td>\r\n<td><strong>Have<\/strong> you seen this movie?<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>They like ice cream<\/td>\r\n<td><\/td>\r\n<td><strong>Do<\/strong> they like ice cream?<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\nNotice again that the dummy auxiliary <em>do<\/em> is required if the basic declarative sentence does not already contain an auxiliary verb.\r\n<h3>The Big Mix<\/h3>\r\nToday's English is a \u201cbig mix\u201d of influences from many different languages over the years.\r\n\r\nEnglish is still considered to be a Germanic language, since the foundation of the language in terms of its basic grammatical structure and its basic vocabulary is Germanic in origin.\r\n\r\nFor example, of the 1,000 most common words in English, 83 per cent are of Germanic origin whereas only 11 per cent are of French origin.\r\n\r\nHowever, of the English extended vocabulary, French has been a huge impact on English and, to a lesser extend, so has Latin (via the Church and scientific terms during the Renaissance and beyond).\r\n\r\nFor example, of the second 1,000 most common words in English, only 43 per cent are Germanic whereas 46 per cent are French and 11 per cent are Latin.\r\n\r\nToday, English contains many words borrowed from all over the globe:\r\n\r\nFor example, <em>tattoo<\/em> is a Polynesian word, <em>alcohol<\/em> is an Arabic word, <em>kindergarten<\/em> is a German word, <em>kayak<\/em> is an Inuit word, and <em>shampoo<\/em> comes from the Indian subcontinent.\r\n<h2>World Englishes<\/h2>\r\nToday, English is spoken as a first language in countries all over the world, with numerous different dialects (we will discuss this further in the next module).\r\n\r\nIt is also the language spoken most often as a second language, which allows it to be a <em>lingua franca<\/em> (a common language that allows native speakers of different languages to communicate without the use of translators).\r\n\r\nTwo negative consequences of English as a global and dominant language is that some indigenous languages are becoming extinct, and people who do not speak English are at a disadvantage if they want to participate in business or politics at a global level.\r\n<h3>Beowulf<\/h3>\r\n<em>Beowulf<\/em> is a heroic epic poem written sometime between the eighth and eleventh centuries (during the Old English period).\r\n\r\nBeowulf is the name of the hero who battles three formidable foes before falling to defeat.\r\n\r\nThe poem was written in Old English, although the events take place in Scandinavia.\r\n<h3>Chaucer<\/h3>\r\nGeoffrey Chaucer (1340 to 1400) is probably the most famous writer of the Middle English period. He is the author of <em>Canterbury Tales<\/em>.\r\n<h3>King James Bible, Shakespeare<\/h3>\r\n<h4>King James Bible<\/h4>\r\nThe King James Bible was published in 1611.\r\n\r\nIt is largely based on a translation of the Bible by William Tyndale in 1525.\r\n<h4>Shakespeare<\/h4>\r\nWilliam Shakespeare (1564 to 1616) is the author of numerous plays and poems written between 1590 to 1613.\r\n\r\nHe is largely regarded as England's most famous playwright if not the greatest writer in English.\r\n<h3>John Milton; Samuel Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language<\/h3>\r\n<h4>John Milton<\/h4>\r\nJohn Milton wrote <em>Paradise Lost<\/em> in 1667.\r\n\r\nIt is considered one of the greatest works in the English language.\r\n<h4>Samuel Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language<\/h4>\r\nThe first extensive English dictionary was written by Samuel Johnson and was published in 1755.\r\n\r\nOne result of its publication was increased standardization of spelling in English.\r\n<h3>Romanticism; Victorian; Modernism; and Post-Modernism<\/h3>\r\n<h4>Romanticism<\/h4>\r\nThe Romantic period occurred during the mid-1700s to mid-1800s.\r\n\r\nIt was a reaction to the Industrial Revolution: back to nature and instinct was regarded as being superior to the machine and civilization.\r\n\r\nFamous Romanic writers include:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Sir Walter Scott<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Mary Shelley<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Jane Austen<\/li>\r\n \t<li>William Blake<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Oscar Wilde<\/li>\r\n \t<li>William Wordsworth<\/li>\r\n \t<li>John Keats<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h4>Victorian<\/h4>\r\nThe Victorian era lasted from 1837 to 1901.\r\n\r\nThe novel was the main literary form.\r\n\r\nAuthors could write for the public as opposed to for an aristocratic patron; they could suit the tastes of the common person.\r\n\r\nFamous Victorian writers include:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Bronte sisters<\/li>\r\n \t<li>George Elliot<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Charles Dickens<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Thomas Hardy<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Robert Louis Stevenson<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Lewis Carroll<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h4>Modernism<\/h4>\r\nThe Modernist period was the first half of the 20th century, to the 1970s.\r\n\r\nModernism was a reaction to conservative Victorian attitudes of absolute truths and values.\r\n\r\nFamous Modernist writers include:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>James Joyce<\/li>\r\n \t<li>William Butler Yeats<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Joseph Conrad<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Virginia Woolf<\/li>\r\n \t<li>T. The tribes who settled in central and northern Europe spoke Proto-Germanic.<\/p>\n<p>Proto-Celtic was spoken by the tribes who continued their migration to the western periphery of the continent and on to what is now called the British Isles.<\/p>\n<h3>Celtic<\/h3>\n<p>In the first millennium B.C.E., Proto-Celtic split into a variety of distinct languages.<\/p>\n<p>Original versions of the following languages were spoken in distinct regions: Irish was spoken in Ireland, Scots Gaelic in Scotland, Welsh in Wales, Cornish in southwestern Britain, and Manx on the Isle of Man.<\/p>\n<h3>Germanic<\/h3>\n<p>Around 1000 B.C.E., Proto-Germanic differentiated from other Indo-European languages in its pronunciation of certain sounds, which has been called the First Sound Shift.<\/p>\n<p>The Germanic languages spoken on the western periphery of the continent formed a group called the West Germanic Branch, spoken by the Angles, the Saxons, the Jutes, and the Frisians, who went on to invade Britain beginning around 449 C.E. (see Anglo Invasion of Britain).<\/p>\n<p>The Germanic languages spoken in modern-day Scandinavia formed a group called North Germanic, spoken by the Vikings (Norse) who invaded Britain a few centuries later, around 793 C.E. (See Viking Invasion of Britain).<\/p>\n<h3>Old English<\/h3>\n<p>From 449 C.E. to 1100 C.E., waves of invasion, migration, and settlement of Germanic tribes from modern-day Denmark and Germany (the Angles, the Saxons, the Jutes, and the Frisians) pushed the Celtic-speaking people to the outlying regions of Britain (Cornwall, Wales, Scotland) and established the Anglo-Saxon people as the main population in Britain. (See the Anglo Invasion of Britain.)<\/p>\n<p>The language (which was constantly changing and evolving) spoken by these people is called Anglo-Saxon, and it formed the base for Old English.<\/p>\n<p>The Norse people from modern-day Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, who spoke North Germanic languages, started to invade Britain in the late eighth century. They settled in the north and east of Britain. (See Viking invasion of Britain.)<\/p>\n<p>Due to the influence of the Norse languages, the vocabulary of Old English was expanded (with the addition of <em>sk<\/em> words like <em>sky, skin, skill, <\/em>and<em> skirt<\/em>, for example) and the complicated system of inflectional endings on nouns and verbs was simplified or <strong>levelled<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Middle English<\/h3>\n<p>The Middle English period lasted from 1100 C.E. to 1500 C.E.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest change in the language came about from the influx of French vocabulary introduced by the French-speaking ruling and upper classes for the few centuries after the Norman invasion.<\/p>\n<p>Some characteristics of the language were the <em>thou<\/em> series of pronouns being used as well as simple negation and interrogation.<\/p>\n<p>The Great Vowel Shift had begun (but not ended) and the printing press had been invented, which led to some spelling standardization.<\/p>\n<h2>Modern English or Present-Day English<\/h2>\n<p>Modern English dates from 1650 to the present day.<\/p>\n<p>Modern English is an international language used as a first or second language throughout the world. (See World Englishes.)<\/p>\n<h2>The People and Main Events<\/h2>\n<h3>European Copper Age<\/h3>\n<p>The Copper Age was a transitional period between the Stone Age (when most tools were made of stone) and the Bronze Age (when tools were instead made of certain metals, especially bronze). In the Copper Age, stone tools were used alongside early metal ones, often made of copper.<\/p>\n<p>In Europe, the Copper Age lasted for a period sometime in the fourth millennium B.C.E. (that is, sometime between 4000 B.C.E. and 3000 B.C.E.).<\/p>\n<h3>Celtic Tribes Reach Britain<\/h3>\n<p>Celtic tribes had reached and settled in Britain, including modern-day Ireland, by the late Iron Age, sometime around 300 B.C.E. (which was the period of maximum Celtic expansion).<\/p>\n<h3>Roman Empire Reaches Britain<\/h3>\n<p>The main Roman invasion of Britain took place in 43 C.E., although, prior to that, smaller incursions had taken place and certain trading and diplomatic relationships had been established between Roman forces and outposts and the Celtic peoples of southern Britain.<\/p>\n<p>Roman forces took control of all of present-day England and Wales but never reached present-day Ireland or Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the Romans gave up trying to conquer the Pictish and Celtic tribes in that region, so they built Hadrian\u2019s Wall (starting around 122 C.E.) to contain them in the north.<\/p>\n<p>Some Roman soldiers settled in Britain and intermarried with the local Celtic population. William the Conqueror, as he came to be known, took the throne as the King of England.<\/p>\n<p>The Normans took control of all government, administration, and church affairs, thus introducing many French words into the vocabulary of English.<\/p>\n<p>French was the main language of the ruling and upper classes for almost four centuries, until the end of the Hundred Years\u2019 War.<\/p>\n<h3>Imperialism and Colonization; Discovering New People<\/h3>\n<p>The years from 1500 to the early 1900s marked a period of exploration, domination, and colonization for England.<\/p>\n<p>England started by establishing plantations in parts of Ireland before extending its reach across the Atlantic and colonizing parts of North America.<\/p>\n<p>Imperial expansion also took place to the east with colonization of Indonesia and India, and eventually to the South Pacific, primarily Australia.<\/p>\n<p>In the late 1800s to early 1900s, England colonized many regions in Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s Commonwealth is a grouping of 53 independent nations, most of which were once British colonies.<\/p>\n<h3>Global Communications and Interdependence<\/h3>\n<p>Modern technology allows for fast and cheap global communications.<\/p>\n<p>Just as ideas, products, and commodities are being shared between nations, so are <strong>words<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>English has borrowed words from all over the globe just as other languages are borrowing English words to talk about our modern world.<\/p>\n<h3>Inward Influx of Peoples\/Languages<\/h3>\n<p>For the first several thousands of years in which people have inhabited the British Isles, much of the linguistic change has been the result of waves of different people migrating to and\/or invading the islands (for example, Celts, Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, Normans).<\/p>\n<h3>Outward Expansion and Contact with Societies Around the Globe<\/h3>\n<p>For the last 500 years much of the new vocabulary has been due to English-speaking people exploring, conquering, and colonizing places all around the globe.<\/p>\n<p>As these speakers encountered new societies, new animals, new foods, new technologies, and so forth, they needed words to talk about these objects, so they often borrowed the words that the local populations used.<\/p>\n<h2>Other Key Events<\/h2>\n<h3>The Birth of Christ<\/h3>\n<p>This event is important for the development of English because, in the fourth century, Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire.<\/p>\n<p>Even after the withdrawal of Roman forces from Britain, Christian monasteries were established through the support of Rome in an effort to convert the inhabitants of the British Isles to Christianity.<\/p>\n<p>All of the proceedings of the Church were carried out in Latin. Monasteries were also places of education, thus many Latin religious and educational terms entered the language.<\/p>\n<h3>Roman Withdrawal from Britain<\/h3>\n<p>By around 410 all Roman troops had left Britain to fight battles on the continent, leading up to the eventual fall of the Roman Empire.<\/p>\n<h3>Danelaw Established<\/h3>\n<p>In 878, Anglo-Saxon king Alfred the Great defeated the Vikings and established a region in which they were to live and peacefully coexist with the English.<\/p>\n<h3>The Black Death<\/h3>\n<p>The Black Death (bubonic plague) spread through Europe in the late 1340s and reached England around 1348.<\/p>\n<p>It killed a quarter to a third of Europe\u2019s population in the years 1347 to 1350.<\/p>\n<p>England was particularly harshly hit, with 70 percent of the population dying.<\/p>\n<p>England\u2019s pre-plague population was around 7 million by 1400, the population was only 2 million.<\/p>\n<p>Numerous but less devastating outbreaks of the bubonic plague continued to torment Europe until the 1700s.<\/p>\n<p>England\u2019s social structure was greatly affected with the peasant classes gaining upward mobility due to the labour shortage and more available land.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, classes were intermingling much more, which is one suggestion for why the Great Vowel Shift occurred.<\/p>\n<h3>Printing Press<\/h3>\n<p>Around 1440, Johann Gutenberg invented the printing press in Germany, and it was soon reproduced throughout Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The printing press allowed for mass production of written text. This resulted in<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a much larger percentage of the population becoming literate<\/li>\n<li>beginning of the standardization of spelling systems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Hundred Years\u2019 War<\/h3>\n<p>The Hundred Years\u2019 War was actually a series of wars between the House of Valois (based in France) and the Plantagenets (ruling in England) who were battling for the French throne.<\/p>\n<p>The wars lasted just over 100 years (from 1337 to 1453).<\/p>\n<p>The House of Valois won the war for the throne of France, and the Plantagenets were expelled from France.<\/p>\n<p>Afterwards, the close contact that had been maintained between England and France since the Norman Invasion came to an end, and nationalistic sentiments took hold.<\/p>\n<p>English replaced French as the main language of the ruling and upper classes in England.<\/p>\n<h3>English Renaissance and the Age of Exploration<\/h3>\n<p>The English Renaissance began in the early 1500s and was a period of great cultural and artistic growth.<\/p>\n<p>During the Age of Exploration, which lasted until the early 1700s, many nations in Europe, including England, explored the world by sea in search of trade goods and trading partners.<\/p>\n<p>These periods led to a tremendous enhancement of knowledge that was accompanied by vast expansion of the English vocabulary.<\/p>\n<h2>Language Characteristics<\/h2>\n<h3>The First Sound Shift<\/h3>\n<p>When Proto-Germanic evolved from Proto-Indo-European during the first millennium B.C.E., one of the big changes was in the pronunciation of certain consonants (which marks today\u2019s Germanic languages as different from other Indo-European languages).<\/p>\n<p>In 1822, Jakob Grimm (of Grimm\u2019s fairy tales) hypothesized this change and called it the First Sound Shift.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some examples from English (a Germanic language), Latin, and French (both Romance Languages) to demonstrate the difference.<\/p>\n<table style=\"height: 60px;\" cellpadding=\"10\">\n<thead>\n<tr style=\"height: 15px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 15px; width: 136.344px;\"><em>fish<\/em><\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 15px; width: 116.688px;\"><em>piscis<\/em><\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 15px; width: 130.234px;\"><em>peche<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h3>Highly Inflected<\/h3>\n<p>Like German, its modern Germanic-language cousin, Anglo-Saxon had a system of endings, or <strong>suffixes<\/strong>, placed on noun and verb roots that conveyed grammatical information.<\/p>\n<p>On nouns, the endings would indicate what role the noun played in the sentence (for example, was it the subject, the direct object, the indirect object?, etc.).<\/p>\n<p>On verbs, the endings would indicate information about the subject (such as the number and person of the subject), about the verb itself (such as weak versus strong) and about the event (past, present, future, subjunctive, and so forth).<\/p>\n<p>Since nouns and verbs carried so much information about their relationship within the sentence, speakers did not need to rely on word order to establish those relationships.<\/p>\n<p>For example, in Modern English the noun acting as the subject almost always comes in front of the verb and the noun acting as the object almost always comes after the verb.<\/p>\n<p><em>The toddler<\/em> (subject) <em>hugged<\/em> (verb) <em>the dog<\/em> (object).<\/p>\n<p>Mixing up the order does not make sense in Modern English (*<em>hugged the dog the toddler<\/em>) but would have been fine in Old English.<\/p>\n<h3>Grammatical Simplification<\/h3>\n<p>Anglo-Saxon was a highly <em>inflected <\/em>language.<\/p>\n<p>As the Anglo-Saxon populations and the Norse populations began to interact and intermarry, the Anglo-Saxon language lost many of its complicated <em>inflectional<\/em> endings that marked grammatical information.<\/p>\n<p>This type of change is called <strong><em>levelling<\/em><\/strong> (simplification due to languages mixing).<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the word order in sentences became more rigid as a way to indicate which nouns were acting as the subject or the object of a sentence.<\/p>\n<h3>Compounding<\/h3>\n<p>One trait of Old English, similar to other Germanic languages, was the tendency to put two pre-existing words together to form a compound when a new word was required.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the Old English word for <em>dawn<\/em> was <em>doegred<\/em>, which is a compound of <em>day <\/em>and<em> red<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3>Pronouns<\/h3>\n<p>The pronouns <em>thou, thee, thy, <\/em>and<em> thine<\/em> were used for second-person singular (where we use <em>you, you, your, yours<\/em> today).<\/p>\n<h3>Simple Negation and Interrogation<\/h3>\n<p>Asking questions (the <em>interrogative structure<\/em>) and negating a statement (the <em>negative structure<\/em>) were done without the assistance of an auxiliary verb such as <em>do<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Goest thou to market?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I go not.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Influx of French Vocabulary<\/h3>\n<p>From the Norman invasion of England in 1066 to the end of the Hundred Years&#8217; War in 1453, the ruling and upper classes in England spoke French and had very close political and economic ties with France. As a result, many French words entered the vocabulary of the general public as well, especially in domains such as government and administration (for example, <em>citizen<\/em> and <em>salary<\/em>) and high society (such as, <em>servant<\/em> and <em>royal<\/em>).<\/p>\n<h3>The Great Vowel Shift<\/h3>\n<p>Starting sometime in the 13th century, English speakers started to change the way they pronounced many of the vowels in their language.<\/p>\n<p>By around 1600 this sound shift had stabilized with the result that certain English vowels are pronounced quite differently than vowels of other European languages.<\/p>\n<p>For example, in Italian the letter <em>i<\/em> is pronounced [i], whereas in English it is pronounced [aj] \/ [aI].<\/p>\n<p>The shift was quite systematic in that speakers tended to pronounce the vowels with a higher jaw\/tongue position than they had previously done.<\/p>\n<p>The examples below demonstrate pre- and post-shift pronunciation of certain words.<\/p>\n<table style=\"height: 45px;\" cellpadding=\"10\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"height: 15px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 15px; This resulted in some words being spelled, even today, very differently than they are pronounced.<\/p>\n<p>The publication<em>,<\/em> in 1755, of Samuel Johnson&#8217;s <em>Dictionary of the English Language <\/em>also aided in standardizing the spelling of English.<\/p>\n<h3>Vocabulary Expansion; Discovering New People<\/h3>\n<p>The size of the English vocabulary exploded during the Early Modern and Modern English periods out of necessity to accommodate all the new ideas and objects that English speakers encountered during years of the English Renaissance and the Age of Exploration, followed by the periods of Imperialism and Colonization.<\/p>\n<p>Words were borrowed from all corners of the globe and incorporated into the English language.<\/p>\n<h3>Complex Negation and Interrogation<\/h3>\n<p>By the Modern English period, negation and interrogation had evolved to today&#8217;s complex structure that requires the involvement of one of the main auxiliary verbs: <em>to be<\/em>, <em>to have<\/em>, or <em>to do<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>To negate a sentence, the negative word is placed immediately after the auxiliary verb (bolded):<\/p>\n<table cellpadding=\"10\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>I <strong>am<\/strong> going to school.<\/td>\n<td>becomes<\/td>\n<td>I <strong>am<\/strong> NOT going to school.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>I <strong>have<\/strong> seen this movie.<\/td>\n<td><\/td>\n<td>I <strong>have<\/strong> NOT seen this movie.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>I like ice cream.<\/td>\n<td><\/td>\n<td>I <strong>do<\/strong> NOT like ice cream.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Notice that if the basic declarative sentence (a sentence that makes a statement) does not contain an auxiliary verb, the &#8216;dummy&#8217; auxiliary <em>do<\/em> is inserted.<\/p>\n<p>To make an interrogative sentence (one that asks a question) out of a declarative, the positions of the subject and the auxiliary verb are reversed:<\/p>\n<table cellpadding=\"10\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>The student <strong>is<\/strong> walking to school.<\/td>\n<td>becomes<\/td>\n<td><strong>Is<\/strong> the student walking to school?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>You <strong>have<\/strong> seen this movie.<\/td>\n<td><\/td>\n<td><strong>Have<\/strong> you seen this movie?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>They like ice cream<\/td>\n<td><\/td>\n<td><strong>Do<\/strong> they like ice cream?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Notice again that the dummy auxiliary <em>do<\/em> is required if the basic declarative sentence does not already contain an auxiliary verb.<\/p>\n<h3>The Big Mix<\/h3>\n<p>Today&#8217;s English is a \u201cbig mix\u201d of influences from many different languages over the years.<\/p>\n<p>English is still considered to be a Germanic language, since the foundation of the language in terms of its basic grammatical structure and its basic vocabulary is Germanic in origin.<\/p>\n<p>For example, of the 1,000 most common words in English, 83 per cent are of Germanic origin whereas only 11 per cent are of French origin.<\/p>\n<p>However, of the English extended vocabulary, French has been a huge impact on English and, to a lesser extend, so has Latin (via the Church and scientific terms during the Renaissance and beyond).<\/p>\n<p>For example, of the second 1,000 most common words in English, only 43 per cent are Germanic whereas 46 per cent are French and 11 per cent are Latin.<\/p>\n<p>Today, English contains many words borrowed from all over the globe:<\/p>\n<p>For example, <em>tattoo<\/em> is a Polynesian word, <em>alcohol<\/em> is an Arabic word, <em>kindergarten<\/em> is a German word, <em>kayak<\/em> is an Inuit word, and <em>shampoo<\/em> comes from the Indian subcontinent.<\/p>\n<h2>World Englishes<\/h2>\n<p>Today, English is spoken as a first language in countries all over the world, with numerous different dialects (we will discuss this further in the next module).<\/p>\n<p>It is also the language spoken most often as a second language, which allows it to be a <em>lingua franca<\/em> (a common language that allows native speakers of different languages to communicate without the use of translators).<\/p>\n<p>Two negative consequences of English as a global and dominant language is that some indigenous languages are becoming extinct, and people who do not speak English are at a disadvantage if they want to participate in business or politics at a global level.<\/p>\n<h3>Beowulf<\/h3>\n<p><em>Beowulf<\/em> is a heroic epic poem written sometime between the eighth and eleventh centuries (during the Old English period).<\/p>\n<p>Beowulf is the name of the hero who battles three formidable foes before falling to defeat.<\/p>\n<p>The poem was written in Old English, although the events take place in Scandinavia.<\/p>\n<h3>Chaucer<\/h3>\n<p>Geoffrey Chaucer (1340 to 1400) is probably the most famous writer of the Middle English period. He is the author of <em>Canterbury Tales<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3>King James Bible, Shakespeare<\/h3>\n<h4>King James Bible<\/h4>\n<p>The King James Bible was published in 1611.<\/p>\n<p>It is largely based on a translation of the Bible by William Tyndale in 1525.<\/p>\n<h4>Shakespeare<\/h4>\n<p>William Shakespeare (1564 to 1616) is the author of numerous plays and poems written between 1590 to 1613.<\/p>\n<p>He is largely regarded as England&#8217;s most famous playwright if not the greatest writer in English.<\/p>\n<h3>John Milton; Samuel Johnson&#8217;s Dictionary of the English Language<\/h3>\n<h4>John Milton<\/h4>\n<p>John Milton wrote <em>Paradise Lost<\/em> in 1667.<\/p>\n<p>It is considered one of the greatest works in the English language.<\/p>\n<h4>Samuel Johnson&#8217;s Dictionary of the English Language<\/h4>\n<p>The first extensive English dictionary was written by Samuel Johnson and was published in 1755.<\/p>\n<p>One result of its publication was increased standardization of spelling in English.<\/p>\n<h3>Romanticism; Victorian; Modernism; and Post-Modernism<\/h3>\n<h4>Romanticism<\/h4>\n<p>The Romantic period occurred during the mid-1700s to mid-1800s.<\/p>\n<p>It was a reaction to the Industrial Revolution: back to nature and instinct was regarded as being superior to the machine and civilization.<\/p>\n<p>Famous Romanic writers include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sir Walter Scott<\/li>\n<li>Mary Shelley<\/li>\n<li>Jane Austen<\/li>\n<li>William Blake<\/li>\n<li>Oscar Wilde<\/li>\n<li>William Wordsworth<\/li>\n<li>John Keats<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Victorian<\/h4>\n<p>The Victorian era lasted from 1837 to 1901.<\/p>\n<p>The novel was the main literary form.<\/p>\n<p>Authors could write for the public as opposed to for an aristocratic patron; they could suit the tastes of the common person.<\/p>\n<p>Famous Victorian writers include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bronte sisters<\/li>\n<li>George Elliot<\/li>\n<li>Charles Dickens<\/li>\n<li>Thomas Hardy<\/li>\n<li>Robert Louis Stevenson<\/li>\n<li>Lewis Carroll<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Modernism<\/h4>\n<p>The Modernist period was the first half of the 20th century, to the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>Modernism was a reaction to conservative Victorian attitudes of absolute truths and values.<\/p>\n<p>Famous Modernist writers include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>James Joyce<\/li>\n<li>William Butler Yeats<\/li>\n<li>Joseph Conrad<\/li>\n<li>Virginia Woolf<\/li>\n<li>T. S.
