Introduction
Sinew channel needling, first discussed in chapter 13 of the Lin Shu (the Spiritual Pivot) has been translated by various authors (Deadman, Maciocia, Pokert, Legge), possibly leading to some misinterpretations of the original text. Traditionally thought of as conduits for the superficial Wei Qi, needling of the sinew channels has often been described with superficial techniques. However, most often used to treat musculoskeletal pathology, current research suggests that deeper needling evoking a local twitch results in better outcomes in terms of reducing pain, improving ROM, strength and ultimately function. As such, the following text provides a musculoskeletal approach to needling the sinew channels. This needling manual was developed to supplement Acupuncture 111 at MacEwan University and is in no way intended to be used in isolation and must only be used by those who are already licensed to perform needling or in supplement to an in-person instructional course.
