[Intro]

Hi and welcome to what are Open Education Resources (OER)? This video is a brief introduction to the concept of open education resources or OER.

What is an OER?

Open means these resources do not have the added constraints of licenses or royalty fees for educational purposes. Educational resources refers to items that teachers or students find valuable to use in their classes. Essentially they can be anything photos, videos, even entire textbooks.

[Does this mean you can do anything?]

Does this mean you can do absolutely anything you want with an OER? Well not quite, although there is no fee attached creators will specify how the item can be reused. You can find this information in the terms of use disclaimer, or more often in a creative commons license.

[Creative Commons]

Assigning a creative commons license to a work allows creators to hold onto their copyright while offering users the option to reuse the work in a manner that is acceptable to the author. You can find the full description of different creative commons licenses from the website creativecommons.org

[Not an OER]

What is not an OER? Fully Copyrighted Resources which are resources that do not reside in the public domain and are not licensed using Creative Commons. Subscription-Based Resources your campus Library subscribes and pays for the digital resources available to students and faculty. There are a number of different ways to locate open education resources. Algonquin College’s Open Educational Resources Guide is one place to start. Creative commons also has a search tool available at creativecommons.org. When you’re searching anywhere online check the search settings to see if you can limit by license type.

There you have it; everything you need to know to get you started about OER. For a more in-depth look at Open Educational Resources please consult the works listed on the Algonquin College Subject Guide or stop by and chat with your friendly library staff.
