Addicted: Exhibiting a compulsive, chronic, physiological, or psychological need for a habit-forming substance, behaviour, or activity (Merriam-Webster, n.d.)

 

Alberta Government Pandemic Response: The Alberta Government’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic, beginning in March 2020.

 

Artistic hobbies: Conforming to the standards; satisfying aesthetic requirements (dictionary.com, n.d.)

 

Cope (Coping): To deal with and attempt to overcome problems and difficulties (Merriam-Webster Dictionary, 2021)

 

Covid-19 (Covid): A respiratory disease that, when contracted, can affect an individual’s breathing and/or sense of smell and taste (Johns Hopkins Medicine, 2020, para, 7–8)

 

Dependent variable: What happens as a result of the independent variable (National Library of Medicine, n.d.)

 

Depression: A condition characterized by persistent sadness and a lack of interest or pleasure in previously rewarding or enjoyable activities (World Health Organization, n.s., para. 1)

 

DSM-5: Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders: authoritative volume that defines and classifies mental disorders in order to improve diagnoses, treatment, and research by hundreds of international experts in all aspects of mental health (American Psychiatric Association, 2021)

 

Electronic hobbies: Of, relating to, or controlled by computers or computerized systems (Dictionary.com, n.d.); hobbies that require technological devices in order to participate. (e.g. videogames, television watching, social media) (Niemeyer & Hui, personal communication, 2021)

 

Fully vaccinated: An individual that has had two Covid-19 vaccinations for two or more weeks

 

Front of House: The part of business where the employees deal directly with customers (Cambridge Dictionary, 2021)

 

Independent variable: What we expect will influence dependent variables (National Library of Medicine, n.d.)

 

Infodemic: Too much information, including false or misleading information, in digital and physical environments during a disease outbreak (World Health Organization, n.d. para. 1)

 

Logical hobbies: Reasoning in accordance with the principles of logic, as a person or the mind (Dictionary.com, n.d.)

 

Mental Health: Our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Mental health affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices (mentalHealth.gov, 2020, para. 1)

 

Pandemic: An outbreak of disease that occurs over a wide geographic area (such as multiple countries or continents) and typically affects a significant proportion of the population: a pandemic outbreak of a disease (Merriam-Webster, 2021)

 

Partially vaccinated: An individual that has had one Covid-19 vaccination, or two Covid-19 vaccinations for less than two weeks

 

Physical hobbies: Of or relating to the body (Dictionary, n.d.); any hobby that involves physical activity (e.g., sports, running or walking, bodybuilding)

 

Social media: Forms of electronic communication . . . through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (such as videos) (Merriam-Webster, n.d.)

 

Social media addiction: A behavioural addiction that is defined by being overly concerned about social media, driven by an uncontrollable urge to log on to or use social media, and devoting so much time and effort to social media that it impairs other important life areas (Addiction Center, n.d.)

 

Social network analysis: A research method developed primarily in sociology and communication science focusing on patterns of relations among people and groups such as organizations and states (Hansen & Himelboim, 2020)

 

Stressor: A stimulus that causes stress (Merriam-Webster Dictionary, 2021)

 

Survey: A research method used to collect information from a group of people regarding a specific topic

 

Unique interaction: A unique post or interaction can include a reply to a post, an original comment, or a reshare or retweet that has been posted with additional commentary or information (Walji, personal communication, 2021)

 

Vaccine exceptions: Validated reasons for an individual not to receive a vaccine, typically for medical or religious-based reasons

 

Young adult: A person who is in his or her late teenage years or early twenties (Cambridge Dictionary, 2022)
